About the event

A chance to come and be 'mindfully destructive' in an attempt to weaken the hold dock and bracken have in a few areas to encourage biodiversity. If you get hot, we have an icy cold plunge pool just waiting, so why not come burn some calories, dance and jump in!

Bracken comes back stronger when cut but when squished has to use all its energy to survive... after two or three seasons it's then very easy to reclaim the area. We have two zones that we will be reclaiming and as it's up the far end of the land we're going to do it en masse to some funky house music! Bring boots/wellies/gloves and any other gear that makes you fearless in the undergrowth!

The first year we came to know Cwm Caredig, Cuckoo flower covered the pastures and made the valley look like a wedding cake! So much cuckoo flower it looked like pale pink snow! The following year however vast areas were taken over by dock leaves, probably enjoying the first time the valley didn't get mowed. Rather than try to remove the evasive dock, we're going to weaken its hold by cutting off flowering heads before they go to seed.

There are varying methods for doing this mindfully so that surrounding flora doesn't get unnecessarily hacked. My favoured option would be to lop the head off with a precision slice from my samurai sword but because of my tennis elbow and obvious health and safety measures, please leave your weapons at home and instead come armed with suitable garden tools! We have plenty of bamboo canes so you can always pretend you have a samurai sword! It's a great opportunity to release unspent anger and stress and help us allow the cuckoo flower and summer grasses to stay .

PLEASE DO NOT JUST TURN UP! If you RSVP, someone on our admin team will write to you and when you've completed our volunteer application form and we have confirmed your place on the day, you'll be sent directions and guidelines on what to bring, where to park and so on! If you do not respond before Friday lunchtime, you'll have to use messenger or call us if you have our number as we will not be doing admin Friday afternoon! We will however be making a big pot of something yummy for lunch so numbers are important to know how many we are feeding!

We have a large proportion of our community that are neurodiverse, so to make our volunteer days a safe space, it's important to know who is attending, whether you intend to bring a pet and what your expectations are for the day! Pure volunteering is very welcome, but as our volunteer days also double up as community open days, we want to know if joining our community is something you might be interested in! If you're just wanting to learn about growing veganic food and plants, these are areas of special interest for a few of us and when we know someone wants information we love to share!

When there is a large response to our events, and because we have limited parking we have to cap numbers. On this particular volunteer day we are also able to show prospective applicants who wish to buy in and join our community the chance to view the properties. To view property there is a screening process so please, please help us by completing the tribe seeking form on the website if you wish to make the most of the housing association prices!
